This week I am doing a special movie review for one of our favorite Aussie Top Cats . . . Pyewacket! The first time mommy and I ever heard the name "Pyewacket" was in the movie "Bell, Book, and Candle" . . . and it was the name of a magical meezer! This one is for you, Pye!
Gillian Holroyd (Kim Novak) is an anthropologist who sells tribal masks and native artwork in her unique shop in New York. Gillian also happens to be a witch, and lives behind her shop with her familiar, a siamese named Pyewacket, and downstairs from her fellow witch and aunt Queenie (Elsa Lanchester) and the ordinary and non-magical Shep Henderson (Jimmy Stewart). Gillian finds herself bored with her life, and intrigued by her neighbor Shep. When she learns that Shep is engaged to a former classmate who was less than nice in their school days, Gillian feels no compunction about trying to steal Shep away for her own amusement. However, when he seems a little reluctant to fall for her charms, Gillian resorts to her magic to sway him. What Gillian doesn't expect is that she will genuinely begin to care for Shep . . . or that she will come to regret ensorcelling him. Matters are complicated when her brother Nicky (Jack Lemmon), a warlock, begins to share their secrets with a writer (Ernie Kovacs) whose book Shep plans to publish. Gillian must decide if she should be the one to share her secret with Shep . . . and risk losing him forever.
Shep and Pyewacket
"Bell, Book and Candle" combines romance, comedy, and drama into a wonderfully amusing (and slightly macabre) tale. Kim Novak is stunningly beautiful and mysterious as Gillian, and Jimmy Stewart does his usual incredibly lovable job as the lead male, Shep. The meezer Pywacket is flawless as the powerful familiar, hyponotizing the audience with his incredible blue eyes and deep, rumbling purr.
